The ERATO project research team (project leader: Prof. Jun Kataoka), led by Senior Researcher Seiichi Yamamoto, Professor Jun Kataoka (Waseda University), Dr. Tomohiro Yamashita (Kobe Proton Beam Center), Associate Professor Masao Yoshino, Associate Professor Kei Kamada (NICHe), Professor Akira Yoshikawa (IMR) and Professor and Professor Teiji Nishio (Osaka University) have discovered that polyester fabrics and clothing, which are commonly available on the market, emit light when exposed to radiation. They have discovered that polyester fabrics and clothing, which are commercially available on the market, emit light when irradiated. They have also succeeded in visualizing the emission of light from polyester clothing irradiated by proton beams used in radiotherapy as a series of images at short time intervals (real-time images). Polyester fabrics and clothing are soft and bendable, and are expected to be applied not only to radiation therapy but also to various fields related to radiation measurement.
The results were published in Scientific Reports on June 12, 2024.
