The ERATO Kataoka X-ray Gamma-ray Imaging Project (Research Director: Prof. Jun Kataoka, joins Associate Prof. Masao Yoshino, Associate Prof. Kei Kamada and Prof. Akira Yoshikawa) has developed a high-resolution radiation imaging detector and succeeded in visualizing alpha rays, a type of radiation, flying through matter as a series of images at short time intervals.
Alpha particles only travel extremely short distances within materials, on the order of a few tens of micrometers, it was previously thought impossible to observe the tracks of alpha particles through materials in real time.
The research team has developed a new imaging detector, making imaging possible for the first time in the world, which is expected to lead to applications in a variety of scientific fields in the future, such as radiation therapy using alpha particles.
The results were published online in Scientific Reports on April 26, 2023.
